OSIEC: Osun lawmaker, Irekandu calls for free and fair council polls

The Honourable Member of Osun State House of Assembly representing Obokun State Constituency, Honourable Adewumi Adeyemi IREKANDU has called on the newly confirmed Chairman of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission and the other members to be neutral, truly independent and fair as they set to organise fresh local council elections in the state.

This call was contained in a press statement signed and made available to journalists shortly after the successful screening and confirmation of the new OSIEC Chairman and its members by the Osun State House of Assembly.

While commending the Osun State Governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, for the calibre of nominees and for the promptness in sending the nominee's list to the State Assembly, the lawmaker said that it is not yet over until the new leadership of the electoral body organises a free and fair election devoid of government's undue influence or intervention.

The 36-year-old Member of State Parliament disclosed that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission is an Independent Commission that does not need the "guesses and approvals" of anyone regardless of his/her position in the State or Nation to deliver its mandate as contained in 'Section 197' of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

IREKANDU explained that "during the screening exercise, the Chairman of OSIEC told the Osun State Parliament that his allegiance is to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which empowered him as the head of the Independent Commission. I want to trust him by his words and hope he convinces us with lawful performance as they render their services to the State. As lawmakers, we will be observing carefully to see that the purpose and true essence of the commission is achieved, Hon. Adewumi added.

Honourable Adewumi also commended the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye for his interest in free and fair elections for the development of our State and Nation. "This you've continuously asserted since the screening exercise began", the honourable concluded.
